At a press conference on 21st December 1999, it was formally announced that the World Blind Bowling Championships would be held at Girvan Bowling Club during August 2001, the first time this prestigious event has been held in Scotland. Rhona Brankin MSP, Deputy Sports Minister and David Kemp from Sport Scotland were present to announce financial support to the International Blind Bowling Association (IBBA) to organise the event. The World Championship will attract players from across the globe, from around 10 countries as far afield as Australia, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Israel and Zimbabwe aside from UK representatives, spectators and dignitaries, will ensure a very busy two weeks for members of GBC. A prestigious opening ceremony is planned, a member of the royal family having been invited to open the event, with local entertainment ensuring a traditional Scottish welcome to our overseas visitors. Press, radio and TV are therefore expected to be present, providing good publicity opportunities.

Girvan Bowling Club is delighted to have been selected as the venue for the 2001 World Blind Bowling Championships, having enjoyed a long standing relationship with the IBBA, and made many friends in the world of blind bowling. This association dates back ten years, starting with the staging of the Home International Singles Championship for the blind in 1990 and 1995. More recently, a Tri-Am was held during September 1999 between Canada, Israel and Scotland. Over the years this has resulted in a nucleus of members experienced in the specialist marking requirements for this type of event. In 2001, Girvan Bowling Club will once again provide markers, and also be responsible for providing the infra structure, including of course the greens facilities, catering and general hospitality, during the two week Championships.
